Water damage. Some water spilled on the controller and entered via the D-Pad, ending around the contacts connecting the left rumble motor to the main board. I was unaware of this and once turned on worked for 5 – 10 minutes before failing. The Xbox guide button lights up when a USB cable is attached but not with batteries. It does not function in any other way and there are no immediate signs of damage on the main board and contacts.
