Apps

f.lux (preview, root-only)

Android Police coverage: Screen Filter App f.lux Is Now Available In The Play Store (Root Required)

F.Lux filters your device’s screen according to the time of day, allegedly resulting in text and images that are easier to see and reduce eye strain. The results are highly subjective, but if you need relief, it’s more than worth a shot. Unfortunately you’ll need root permissions to get the most out of the app, and it still doesn’t work with some Samsung phones or tablets.

f.lux removes the bright blue colors from your phone to help you wind down at night and returns your screen to normal the next day. This preview version is not a final release. It requires a rooted phone, and otherwise it will not do much. We appreciate your help with bug reports and feature questions. Most rooted Lollipop and Marshmallow devices (5.x and 6.x) will work. Some rooted Kitkat (4.x) devices will work, but many do not.

Work Folders

Android Police coverage: Microsoft Brings Work Folders To Android For Keeping Your Company’s Files Synced And Secure Across Devices

Windows still runs on most of the world’s desktop and laptop PCs, and the percentage is even higher for businesses. Microsoft has a new cross-device storage system that lets users easily share files between multiple users, PCs, and mobile devices… and it isn’t Microsoft OneDrive. Nope, this is a different system. But it’s encrypted by default and allows for offline access to stored files.

Work Folders is a location where you can store work files and access them from all of your PCs and devices, even when you’re offline. To use Work Folders, your workplace has to enable your account first. After your account is enabled, you can set up the Work Folders app.

• Access your work files and folders on your devices.
• Pin files so that you can view them while you’re offline.
• Files are encrypted and protected by an app passcode, keeping others out.

B4UFLY

Android Police coverage: Federal Aviation Administration Releases B4UFLY App For Android Users With Drones And Model Planes

The US Federal Aviation Administration has ruled that most “toy”-sized remote control drones and planes now need to be registered, because a few jerks ruined it for everyone. The good news is that they’re making it very easy. The B4UFLY app (get it?) can easily show you where no-fly and restricted flight areas are located, like around airports and some federal buildings, in a built-in map user interface.

The B4UFLY app provides model aircraft users with situational awareness and considers the user’s current or planned location in relation to operational restrictions to derive a specific status indicator. The color and shape coded status indicators inform the user if model aircraft operation is prohibited, requires the user to take certain actions, or if there are no FAA operating restrictions other than flying safely. All model aircraft operations must always yield the right-of-way to manned aircraft.

UberEATS: Faster Delivery

Android Police coverage: Uber Launches UberEATS App On Android, Users Are Uber-Annoyed

Uber is leveraging its ride-sharing app into a delivery service, and this is the official app that lets users order meals from their couches. That’s all well and good, but at the moment UberEats is only available in a fraction of the primary Uber service area, and those who can be served aren’t very happy with the quality of service, a buggy app, and long wait times for deliveries.

Food you want: We’re working with over a hundred restaurants in your city to put great local food all in one place. If your favorite restaurants are cooking, UberEATS is delivering. Full restaurant delivery is currently available in Los Angeles and Toronto and will soon be available in Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Melbourne, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

Android Police coverage: ‘Universal Copy’ Can Copy Text Fields In Apps That Don’t Let You Copy And Paste Natively

If you’ve ever needed to copy text from a field in an app that doesn’t support it, this little tool is for you. That’s just about all that it does: once activated, text from any app can be selected, then copied, cut, or pasted to any other text field. Do not hesitate to leave a rating and a review if you like Universal Copy.

ProtonMail – Encrypted Email

Android Police coverage: [APK Download] Mr. Robot-Approved ProtonMail Gets An Official Android App, But For Some Reason It’s Incompatible With Everything

ProtonMail is a system that offers end-to-end encryption for email. Considering how hard the US and other countries are currently trying to undermine encryption and security in general, anyone could use a little extra security. ProtonMail is encrypted in such a way that not even the developers themselves can access without your personal credentials (and since it’s not on American soil, it’s subpoena-proof). At the moment it’s free, and though the Android app was initially limited by geography, it’s now available in a wide release.

ProtonMail is the world’s largest encrypted email service with over 1 million users. The ProtonMail secure email app for Android brings easy-to-use email encryption to your mobile device by seamlessly integrating PGP end-to-end encryption. ProtonMail also provides a modern user interface with a full set of innovative features such as customizable swipe gestures and the ability to send expiring emails.

Fabric

Android Police coverage: Twitter Fabric App Provides Android Developers With Active Metrics, Alerts, And A General Idea How To Fix Stuff That Breaks

Fabric is a tool from the makers of Twitter that allows other developers to keep an eye on the performance of their apps. It’s essentially a monitor that allows devs to monitor performance, crashes, and other crucial metrics. The interface is surprisingly effective for something so technical, and it’s integrated with the existing Fabric apps on the web and other platforms.

Monitor your app on the go and get real-time alerts when something is critically affecting your app. See the information you need to know to triage the issue: We sift through millions of events every day to intelligently bring the most important information to you. So that even before you pull up your laptop, you know where to look for a bug, who on your team to reach out to, and how that could be affecting your metrics.

PlayStation™Video

Android Police coverage: PlayStation Video Now Streams Movies And TV Shows To Android Devices

Sony tried to make its own video service in the early days of Android. It didn’t work out so well. Now the company is leveraging its super-popular PlayStation brand to try and give it another go. You don’t need a PlayStation to access the movies or TV shows on offer, but if you do have one, you can instantly watch across your game consoles and compatible devices… pretty much like every other video service. The real advantage here is mobile access to any movies you may have bought from your console on the proprietary service.

PlayStation™Video is the best place to watch movies and TV shows purchased or rented from PlayStation® Store. With the PlayStation™Video Android app, you can also rent or buy directly. Watch your favorite movies and shows instantly on your Android phone or tablet (for full list of compatible devices, including PS4®, see www.playstation.com/video)

LastPass Authenticator

Android Police coverage: LastPass Releases Its Own 2-Factor Mobile Authenticator App [Update]

Lastpass is a popular password manager service. This app allows users to use two-factor authentication for that particular service, in theory negating the need for 2FA for at least some other things. It’s a bit complicated, but if all of your passwords are saved in a single account, it’s probably a good idea to lock it down as safely as possible.

LastPass Authenticator is a two-factor authentication app for your LastPass account and other supported apps. LastPass Authenticator offers simple, secure authentication to your accounts by generating passcodes for login or receiving push notifications for one-tap approval. Safeguard your LastPass account by requiring two-factor authentication codes when signing in. Two-factor authentication improves your digital security by protecting your account with an additional login step.

Changelogs

This little tool allows users to view the latest Play Store changelogs of all their apps. It’s a simple idea, but it saves a lot of time compared to checking each Play Store listing manually, especially if you’ve set them to be automatically updated.

View the latest changelogs for your installed applications in a list instead of clicking, app by app, through the Play Store.

KNOWN BUGS AND LIMITATIONS:
– Some applications are missing data. This is controlled by Google’s closed-source API and is totally outside of my control.
– Uninstalled apps aren’t removed from the list until the app is restarted.

Signal Spy

Signal Spy is an app that gives you detailed information on the local conditions of your wireless carrier. Since coverage maps are usually one step above bald-faced lies, that’s some very handy info, especially if you’re buying an unlocked phone: the app will tell you specifically which local LTE band you’re currently using. There’s also a specific function for Google Fi users, allowing them to manually switch between Sprint and T-Mo service on the MVNO.

Signal Spy* allows users to be better informed when it comes to their cellular service. It allows you to see signal strength and technology in real time. We can also tell you what LTE band you’re using on Sprint and T-Mobile so you can understand what speeds and features to expect. Signal Spy also keeps a history of all of your connections: when you connect and disconnect from WiFi, and what carrier you’re using. Pro Users can now see a history of Wi-Fi and Cellular connectivity along with signal strength and location.

Go for reddit

The Play Store has more than a few Reddit clients already, but until the company comes up with something better (aaaaany day now), there remains a market for these third-party apps. This one includes a Material Design interface focused on tabs, a personalized home screen, compatibility with Reddit’s built-in messaging system, and all the usual bells and whistles for browsing the site comfortably.

Share, save, and post your own content with a slick material design interface, customizable to your preference. Keep track of your favourite posts using Go Tags, and manage your throwaways in as easy as a swipe. Give gold (or silver) to your favourite commenters, and participate in the social news site that entertains millions of people daily.

Miitomo

Miitomo is Nintendo‘s first official game… wait, no. Miitomo is Nintendo’s first official app. It isn’t much more than a sort of Tamogatchi playground for the Mii avatars that have been the company’s standard player representations since the Wii came out. You can make your Mii play around, meet other Miis, or dress it up like a paper doll, and take photos of it. It’s kind of random, and only entertaining if you’re already really invested into Nintendo’s meta platform.

Miitomo is an app from Nintendo that brings out a side of you your friends have never seen before. How? By making a Mii of yourself that’s your personal go-between. Ever wonder what fun details make you…YOU? Your Mii will find out by asking you questions about yourself. Want your friends to know all about these little insights into your likes, dislikes, or just what you’re thinking lately? Your Mii will go visit your friends’ Mii characters and tell them.

Basket – Bookmark Read Later

Basket is a system for saving and retrieving online items, a la Pocket or Instapaper. Aside from the impressive Android interface, the app includes a built-in reading mode, offline reading and syncing, and integration with Flipboard and Feedly. Items can be tagged or put into folders for manual sorting, or searched by text, image, or video type.

Basketapp lets you save and organize articles, videos and any other useful links in a beautiful and simple way to increase your web productivity, even when you are offline. Categorize and apply labels on news, research findings and recipes you save to find them quickly. Capability to read your articles later in a clutter free environment, makes it perfect companion for you while travelling, sitting in leisure or while sipping morning coffee.

Encode: Learn To Code

Encode is a tool that’s designed to teach relative luddites like me how to code. The basics are so simple that anyone who knows their recursive functions from a hole in the ground probably won’t get anything out of it, but those who are simply looking for an introduction will be amply served by an easy interface and plain English explanations. At the moment JavaScript is the only language supported, but you can apply a lot of the lessons to others.

Learn to code anywhere with Encode. Encode is packed with fun bite-sized coding challenges and lessons. They’re completely interactive and offer helpful feedback to make sure you’re on the right track. Start by learning the basics (like to how to add numbers using code) and progress to more advanced concepts (like storing data in objects) using JavaScript, a popular programming language.

Klara

There are plenty of weather apps available on Android, but this one is specifically designed to show information quickly in an organized way. All of the standard metrics are in place, including precipitation, cloud coverage, wind speed, air pressure, and humidity. The app also includes four skins and a surprisingly dense homescreen widget.

Klara shows weather forecast in form of simple and easy to read charts. Klara is great for professionals but thanks to its clarity and simplified design it is perfect for common folk too.

* Forecast for any place – data from YR (MET Norway).
* Precipitation, temperature, cloud coverage, wind speed and direction, pressure, humidity.
* Short-term, long-term forecasts.
* Favourite places.
* Four color skins.
* Widget.
