Whilst there’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the new Marvel Disney Plus shows, it’s been well over a year since we last saw an MCU film released. After numerous delays, the next in line is Black Widow.
Following the Avenger and agent Natasha Romanoff, the film Black Widow takes place in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, exploring how Natasha survived on the run and what she had to encounter before she joined the team to defeat Thanos.
We’re only a few months away from the official release date for Black Widow, and you’re probably wondering how you’ll be able to watch it. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the cinema release, Disney Plus release and VOD release.

Will Black Widow release in cinemas?
Yes – Marvel has confirmed that it will still get a theatrical release. Of course, whether or not it releases in a cinema near you is entirely dependent on your country’s COVID procedures.
In the summer we expect both the UK and US to be allowing people into the cinemas, but many will be at limited capacity – which means less revenue at the box office.
Plus, many people will still be hesitant to go the cinemas before receiving a vaccine. However, there is another way to watch Black Widow – at home.
Will Black Widow release on Disney Plus?
Yes – Marvel has confirmed that Black Widow will get get a dual cinema and home release through Disney+ Premiere Access.
Disney+ Premiere Access is a one-off payment on top of an existing Disney+ subscription to give viewers a way to watch films that under normal circumstances would only be available in theatres. So far only two films have been available in this method – Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon.
Both of these films cost £19.99 in the UK. It could be possible that the price of Black Widow may be even higher, considering that Marvel has such a wide-spanning audience. Once we know more, we’ll update this article.
If you’re not already subscribed to Disney+, you can do so on the website. An account costs £7.99 per month, or £79.90 per year at the time of writing.
Here’s what you’ll need to do on 9 July to watch Black Widow at home:
- Sign into your Disney+ account and head to the homepage
- Click on Black Widow
- Click ‘Get Premiere Access’
- Confirm it is an additional purchase, and that you’re happy to billed extra
Will Black Widow be available on VOD and DVD?
Eventually, Black Widow will come to VOD services.
However, this won’t happen immediately. We assume that the film we be available to rent and buy both digitally and on DVD at least a few months after it first releases either in cinemas and on Disney Plus Premiere Access.
In addition, it’s highly likely that Disney+ subscribers will get Black Widow at no extra charge after a few months – so if you’re happy to wait and are already an account holder on this streaming platform, this is the best option.
