Apple has announced a new series of mini documentaries looking at the effects of mental health on our lives hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry.
That’s an unusual combination, but one that’s sure to draw a large audience – especially after Harry and Meghan’s infamous Oprah interview earlier this year. Here’s what to expect from the show and where you can watch it when it’s released.
When will The Me You Can’t See be released?
Apple has confirmed that the entire series will be available this week, on Friday 21 May 2021.
How can I watch The Me You Can’t See?
As this is an Apple Original, the show will be exclusive to Apple TV+, so you’ll need a subscription to that service if you want to watch the series. That costs £4.99/$4.99 a month, though a 7-day trial is available. If you’ve bought a compatible Apple product recently you’ll also have received a one-year free trial, though you probably should buy a new iPhone just to watch this one show.
To see more on The Me You Can’t See, you can visit the dedicated part of the Apple TV+ site.
What is The Me You Can’t See?
This new Apple Original series sees Oprah Winfrey speak to people from all around the world about how they have coped with mental health difficulties. These include actress Glen Close, the aforementioned Duke of Sussex, Lady Gaga, sports star DeMar DeRozan, as well as people from all walks of life who have battled to cope with conditions that can easily affect any one of us.
As you can see from the trailer below, it’s set to be an emotional journey that looks to destigmatise mental health problems and allow people to open up about their struggles. Expect plenty of tears and some heart-wrenching honesty.
Prince Harry talks about how the pandemic has impacted the entire globe, stating that “The results of this year will be felt for decades. The kids, families, husbands, wives, everybody.” Echoing many in the mental health profession who are concerned about the ramifications of the past year or so, where many of us have been confined to our homes, separated from loved ones, all while living in fear of a killer virus.
The trailer also shows footage of Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997, with Harry as a boy looking on. In the past, the Duke has spoken out about how the death of his mother had a damaging effect on his mental health, and for years now both Prince Harry and Prince William have passionately championed the Heads Up campaign that looked to normalise the discussion of mental health through the UK’s favourite sport, football (for players, supporters and their families), by teaming up with the Football Association and appearing on shows like Football Focus.
Hopefully, the discussions of all the participants in The Me You Can’t See will remove the social stain that can accompany the term mental health, freeing people to be able to speak about the things they find overwhelming without fear of ridicule or being dismissed.
If you want to speak to someone about any issues you may be experiencing in regards to mental health, you can contact organisations like Mind, Rethink, or the NHS in the UK. Those living in other regions can simply Google the term mental health and find a suitable organisation that can help them discuss any concerns or be put in touch with specialist healthcare providers.
If this is you then don’t feel that admitting to something like this lessens you in any way. Having the courage to ask for help is one of the bravest things any person can do.
