Samsung will unveil its next flagship Galaxy S phones in February and according to a new rumour they will be called the Galaxy S20 series – not S11.
If the case, it would mark Samsung’s first departure from its sequential numerical naming of its S phones for the past decade, skipping from 2019’s S10 right up to S20. According to reliable tech leaker Ice Universe, it’s a way to ring in the new year 2020.
Next year is 2020, and 20 is a new beginning.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10e, S10, S10 Plus and S10 5G are all excellent smartphones and set the tone for a competitive 2019 in the phone market. Until this rumour we were fully expecting Samsung to unveil the S11 in March, potentially alongside the Galaxy Fold 2.
But instead we could see a somewhat ballsy naming jump. Not that we aren’t used to it – Huawei pulled off a similar jump (and remarkable technologival leap) from the P10 and P10 Plus to the superior P20 and P20 Pro.
Other examples of this is Windows 10 following Windows 8, skipping the ‘9’ branding altogether and burying the misery of Windows 8 firmly in the past.
Apple also announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone X (Ten) on the same day, and still has never released an iPhone 9. The skipping of numbers to a new total – usually 10 or 20 seems to coincide with an excellent new piece of tech.
So yes, the Galaxy S20 would match the year 2020 but we hope it also stems from the company’s confidence in the product’s quality. It’ll likely be amongst the first set of globally released phones to have 5G as standard, with no 4G-only option hardware.
