Original cable was damaged. Acquired n OEM replacement cable and thought I may be able to fix myself. Alas I found it too difficult with cable ends and contacts too small and delicate, with a constant risk of melting the ear pierce plastic. So I have the original cable removed and replacement cable to hand, ready for someone skilled to reattach, please.
